West Virginia’s most hauntingly famous true story? The tale of the Greenbrier Ghost!
In 1897, young Zona Heaster Shue was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Greenbrier County. Her husband claimed it was “natural causes,” but her mother wasn’t buying it, and soon said Zona’s ghost appeared to her, revealing she’d been murdered and her neck broken.
The case was reopened, Zona’s body exhumed, and, sure enough, the evidence matched the ghost’s story. Her husband, Trout Shue, was convicted of her murder.
It’s said to be the only time in U.S. history a ghost’s testimony helped solve a crime!
Today, a roadside marker near her grave tells the story of the Greenbrier Ghost, where fact and folklore still blur together under the Appalachian moonlight.
